Talk to your doctor about heavy periods

The most important thing you can do to take charge of your health is to talk to your doctor about your heavy period and irregular menstrual cycle. Here are a few pointers that will help you feel more confident about starting a discussion at your next appointment:

 

  • Keep a detailed calendar of your period, including fluctuations in your flow and cramping
  • Don’t wait to be asked for information—offer it up
  • Find a doctor who listens to you and makes you feel comfortable
  • Find a doctor who treats you with respect and is interested in the information on your period that you provide
  • Find a knowledgeable and skilled doctor who has some expertise in treating heavy periods and menstrual irregularity
  • Work in partnership with your doctor. Follow through on prescribed medications or procedures and provide complete and honest reports to the doctor
  • When you answer your doctor’s questions, do not exaggerate, deny, or deliberately omit information Be an attentive listener
  • Don’t be afraid to ask specific questions about diagnosis and treatment!
